Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Wood takes on and gives up moisture with the surrounding air all year. In a heated house in winter, indoor humidity can drop to 20% or less, and wood joints can open after a season of heating. Hardwood for cabinets and trim is kiln dried to 6 to 8% moisture, midway between normal indoor extremes, which helps it stay stable.

An outside wall can pass humidity into the cabinets mounted on it. Woodwork standards warn that cabinets or paneling on an exterior wall without a moisture barrier can have their backs buckle or joints shift. Keeping the heat on and the room dry helps new woodwork stay put.

The size of the piece, the wood or finish you choose, and how much detail goes into the doors, trim, and joinery drive the price. Built-ins that tie into walls, with any drywall repair or interior painting around them, add to the scope.

No, the Residential Code of Ohio exempts cabinets, countertops, and similar finish work from building approval. Cutting into walls or removing load-bearing supports is not exempt, so a built-in that changes a wall can need approval. Cabinets for kitchen remodeling follow the same rule.

It depends on the size of the piece and how much has to be built. Woodwork standards call for new woodwork to sit in the room for 72 hours before installation, with the heating or cooling running, so it can adjust to the home. Larger projects that include finish carpentry around the new pieces take longer.
