Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Often, yes. Steel entry door replacement was the second-highest-return project in the 2025 Cost vs. Value report nationally. The report put the average job cost at $2,435 and the estimated resale value at $5,270.

In Ohio, a door between an attached garage and the house must be 1-3/8-inch solid wood, 1-3/8-inch solid or honeycomb-core steel, or a door with a 20-minute fire rating. No door from the garage may open straight into a bedroom.

The door material, the amount of glass, whether it is exterior or interior, and the condition of the opening drive the price. A replacement exterior door usually comes pre-hung in its own frame. Trim work from finish carpentry and fresh interior painting around the opening also add to the scope.

Most steel and fiberglass entry doors without glass insulate more than five times better than a solid wood door of the same size. To carry the ENERGY STAR label, a door with no glass needs a U-factor, the measure of how fast it loses heat, of 0.17 or lower.

Time depends mostly on the number of doors and the condition of each opening. New window replacement in the same wall, or a deck outside a new patio door, can follow the door work.
