Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Each has a drawback in a bathroom. The glue most MDF uses is an interior glue that breaks down with moisture exposure. Finger-jointed wood trim, which is made of short pieces joined end to end, can let natural resins bleed through paint in bathrooms and kitchens, so it needs a stain-blocking primer.

Wood in a home is always gaining or losing a little moisture, and the seasonal swing matters most. Paint slows that movement but does not stop it, so joints can open when the air dries out in winter. Small seasonal gaps are normal, and trim installed at about 8% moisture, the level it will live at in most homes, shows no significant change afterward.

The number of rooms, the style and size of the molding, the wood or MDF you choose, and whether the trim is painted or stained drive the price. In a home built before 1978, pulling old painted trim can fall under federal lead paint rules. Interior painting on the walls around the new trim also adds to the scope, as do built-ins from custom woodworking.

Painted trim is best finished in semi-gloss or high-gloss enamel, though the higher the gloss, the more it shows surface flaws. Knots in almost every species can bleed through light-colored paint, so white trim is best made from knot-free wood. Stain highlights the grain, and blotchy staining cannot be fixed once the stain is on.

Time depends on the number of rooms and the detail of the trim. Trim around new flooring installation, door installation, or custom woodwork follows that work.
